Ultrafiltration
UF
Ultrafiltration (UF) separates large molecules retained by a membrane from smaller molecules and solvent.
In context
When target proteins are retained by the membrane, it can reduce liquid volume to concentrate them.
Example
Retaining a hypothetical protein on a membrane while reducing liquid volume can concentrate it. Changing surrounding solution components differs in purpose from simply reducing volume.
Key distinction
UF and DF may be combined, but distinguish concentration adjustment from solution composition changes.
