Controller and PLC
PLC
A controller is a device or function that uses input information and defined rules to determine output commands.
In context
PLC stands for Programmable Logic Controller, a type of controller that executes logic and sequences at industrial sites. It connects sensors and actuators, but all safety functions cannot be entrusted to a single general-purpose PLC.
Example
A hypothetical transfer device checks a position sensor input and sends a movement command to an actuator when conditions are met. Removing permissive conditions is not a sound improvement.
Key distinction
Distinguish the inputs received, the conditions, and the commands issued.
