Particulate Matter
Particulate matter
PM
Particulate matter consists of small solid particles or liquid droplets suspended in air.
In context
PM10 comprises particles with aerodynamic diameters approximately 10 µm or smaller. PM2.5 comprises particles approximately 2.5 µm or smaller. PM2.5 is included in PM10. µm is a length unit equal to one millionth of 1 m.
Example
Smaller particles may differ in transport and capture characteristics. Absence of visible large dust does not mean absence of fine particles.
Key distinction
Particle size categories and chemical composition provide different information.
