Passive Asset Discovery
Passive discovery
Passive asset discovery identifies network devices and relationships by examining observable existing communications.
In context
It sends no new queries to devices for discovery. However, it can miss noncommunicating devices or devices outside the observation scope.
Example
A quiet standby device absent from observation records must not be concluded to be nonexistent.
Key distinction
Use existing-communication observations together with drawings, asset inventories, and personnel verification.
