Average range
The average range R̄ is the arithmetic mean of the ranges of the subgroups included in the reference data.
Other learning contexts (1)
In context
R̄ is the R chart center line and is also used to estimate within-subgroup standard deviation. Large and small ranges may combine to produce the same average, so check time patterns too.
Example
If hypothetical reference ranges are 1, 2, 3 mm, R̄ = 2 mm. These three values alone do not establish an approved actual reference.
Key distinction
Check subgroup formation and data comparability before calculating R̄.
